Evaluative Research: Real Date Initiative

A several-month initiative for Unveil Social (CanWe), an app that functions as a fun, accessible way to ultimately determine if you and your date have real relationship potential. I kicked this initiative off at almost the same exact time in 2020 that the pandemic started, which made it extra challenging (and 100% remote).

Problem:

The team (before me) built an MVP app grounded in psychological research.

But aside from theory, what do real users think of it?

Methods:

  • Limited to UserTesting.com, startup plan

  • Three unmoderated tests

    • Prep test (70 users)

    • Date test (15 users)

    • Debrief test (14 users)

Deliverables:

  • Directional product positioning

  • Insights about dater psychology/behaviors

  • Validation of value props

  • Map of pain points

  • User quotes and testimonials

Outcomes:

  • Brought understanding of our users and their pain points across the entire team

  • Heavily informed the addition of our pre-date feature and total redesign of the in-person date experience

  • Insights from this project brought our CPI from the double-digits range to ~$2

  • Revealed who was really diggin’ the app (people on same-sex dates!), and set the stage for further investigations into LGBTQIA+ audiences
